Katy Sparrow
Vice President
Katy had planned on attending the first UNCW ECO meeting of Fall 2008 (and she did); however, she couldn't have fantasized that she would find a more idyllic group there. Throughout the past year, she has been developing her activist muscle more rapidly than she could ever have imagined and has formed a family of fast friends in the process.
Because of her involvement with ECO, Katy sees quite a lot of the world. Near campus, she has raised awareness of dirty energy and climate change on street corners. In the bustling Wilmington downtown she has canvassed at the farmers' market, rallied outside a county commissioner meeting, and lobbied her congressman. In February, she traveled to D.C. for an epic summit on climate change, Power Shift 2009. In June, she was a Planet Ambassador at Bonnaroo 2009 in Manchester, TN.
Katy is in her second year at UNCW and is double majoring in Environmental Science and Spanish with a minor in Oceanography. By occupation she is a lifeguard, which mirrors her life's purpose of saving all of humanity from the effects of anthropogenic climate change. Katy trains for triathlons, enjoys boats, cooks great vegan food, practices yoga, works on Green Acres organic farm, and frequents Tidal Creek Co-op. She plans to do a direct-exchange abroad for the academic year in 2010.
